KING OF POP 1958-2009

michael-jackson

I’m watching Vh1 right now, with an endless stream of tears flowing from my eyes.. Watching a tribute to Michael Jackson’s music. They’re playing “Will You Be There?”..

For someone who has grown up to Michael’s music, who knows almost all of his songs by heart, I can’t tell you how much it saddens me that he’s gone at such a young age. I was so looking forward to his comeback this year. The return of The King of Pop.

But you were never gone, Michael. You know that no one can take your place in that unbelievably high pedestal you set for yourself! You weren't just an icon. You weren’t just a legend. What were you? Indescribable.

You will be missed terribly, MJ. But the music you left us with? It’s priceless, timeless and irreplaceable. You, Michael Jackson, will always be there.

Rest in peace.

AN (UN)HAPPY ENDING

Fallen Princesses is a project by Dina Goldstein for an exhibition* to be displayed in October.

“These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The '...happily ever after' is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.”

Dina was not exposed to fairly tales as a child so after observing 3-year old girls who were just starting to develop an interest in Disney’s fairy tales, she began to explore the original stories.

“The Disney versions almost always have sad beginning, with an overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess… I explored the original brothers Grimm's stories and found that they have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney.”

I think that for us girls, we're usually drawn to things with happy endings and charming princes saving the day. So I guess the question is, were we brought up to think that way? Or are we just born with it?

I really like the irony in some of them, like Beauty from Beauty and The Beast, and Snow White taking care of a bunch of kids. Although I don’t want to turn this post into a controversial one, as I’d like to focus on the art itself, but why is Jasmine portrayed as someone fighting in a war? Is that just because she’s an Arab? Is that all people think when they mention Arab countries? I just wish Dina would have been a little bit more politically-friendly and chosen some other way that Jasmine could have fallen. She could have left race out of it, like she did with the others in the series. Maybe I’m taking a bit of a stance here because I’m Arab, but really sometimes the negativity portrayed about us is just too much!

WIN MARGO MORRISON PEARL EARRINGS!

Copy of Pearl Margo 2

I can never leave the house without wearing earrings. For random errands and casual outings, I opt for studs or small earrings. For more dressy events, I choose larger ones such as hoops or semi precious stones. I can forgo any piece of jewelry except for earrings.

Which brings me to this week’s giveaway, from the fabulous Margo Morrison New York. We’re giving away a beautiful pair of freshwater pearl with Swarovski crystal earrings. Oh my gosh, they are the perfect summer accessory. In fact, they are the perfect accessory. In my opinion, a jewelry box is not complete, unless you have a pair of pearl earrings. And a pair of diamond studs. But that’s another story..

To enter, please read the rules below:

  • This contest is open to everyone.

  • Leave a comment on this post telling me what piece of jewelry you can’t leave home without (if any). Is it a ring, a necklace, earrings, etc?

  • You can only comment once.

  • You cannot be anonymous. That means I must be able to track back your comment to a Blogger/Wordpress/etc identity. You don’t have to be a blogger, you should just be registered somewhere where I can find your email, so I can confirm your identity if you win.

The winner will be chosen at random. The contest ends Sunday June 21st, 2009. Winner will be announced the following day.

GOOD LUCK!

Don’t forget, Margo Morrison is also offering Pomegranate & Patchouli readers a 15% off discount on all items.

SPRING/SUMMER 2009 ACCESSORIES

In continuation with last season’s choice for accessories, the runways were full of extravagant bits and bobs, namely necklaces and earrings.  Last season, the runways told us to wear them big and bigger. This season, the designers opted for a more subtle, yet still bold statement. The accessories for the spring/summer runways were more colorful, chunky and a tad more sparkly. They’re also less rock & roll, and more  feminine and light. My favorites were the ones that cover the entire collarbone, it’s an instant outfit upgrade!

Like last season’s accessories, you don't have to splurge on the runway pieces, you can either DIY, thrift shop or go vintage hunting. High street stores like Forever21 and H&M can offer some good options, albeit less dazzling. Hey, beggars can’t be choosers right?

SPRING/SUMMER 2009 FOOTWEAR

Embellished, exaggerated and detailed are the keywords when describing the spring/summer runway footwear. Like last season, the focus is still more on the shoe than the bag. While the fall collections were full of fierce and serious shoes, this season the shoes have more embellishments and more color. The materials used ranged from ultra-luxurious python to animal-friendly canvas. The heels are still rising, though, and the styles keep on coming. The heels are a variety of chunky, spikey and platform. They were less scary than the ones from the fall season, but they’re still stand-outs. My favorites were the Christian Louboutin for Phillip Lim ruffled flats, and the embellished Louis Vuitton stilettos. What are yours?

KHALEEJESQUE

Khaleejesque

Khaleejesque is an new online lifestyle magazine that “revolves around everything hip and happening in the Arabian Gulf countries”. It aims to cover everything from fashion, art and design to travel, entertainment and technology. Khaleej means Gulf and Khaleej-esque basically means “in the style or manner of/resembling the Khaleej”. I love the name. It’s perfect!

Khaleejesque is based in Kuwait and employs freelance writers and photographers from Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman. It’s brand new, but already has a number of interesting articles. I, myself, contributed an article about Closet Candy boutique and how the owner established her business.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Arabian Gulf region, this will be a great source of information.

MARGO MORRISON

Margo2

Margo Morrison New York is a line of semi-precious and pearl jewelry designed by Margo Morrison. Morrison believes in enhancing a woman’s beauty through jewelry which is why her pieces are delicate and romantic, and never too big or bulky. “The great thing about my jewelry is that it looks young and edgy on a 20-year-old, yet elegant and sophisticated on a woman of 60,” says Margo. To attest to that fact, her jewelry has been worn by celebrities of all ages from Blake Lively (who is one of her biggest fans) to Sharon Stone and Julia Roberts.

Margo6

Margo4

You’d be surprised to know that Margo wasn’t always a jewelry designer. She began studying classical piano at age seven and at age sixteen she performed as a soloist with an orchestra. Later, Morrison pursued a degree in journalism, while involving herself in cultural arts and music festivals as well as working as an interior designer. What a woman!

Margo5

The pieces, inspired by Morrison’s travels to South Africa, Europe, Central America and the Middle East, are delicate and colorful. Margo designs necklaces, lariats, bracelets and earrings. You will find semi-precious stones, crystals and pearls of many shapes, textures and colors. The necklaces, lariats and can be mixed and matched together, or worn separately. The wide range of choices makes it possible for every skin tone to find a complimentary piece of jewelry.

Margo9

Margo1

I love Blake Lively’s take on Margo’s jewelry. She layers them on in all shapes and sizes and colors, and they look so cool on her. She’s been seen literally everywhere in them! For one event, Blake even combined eleven Margo Morrison necklaces layered one over the other.

Check back next week because we’re giving away a lovely piece from Margo Morrisson’s line!
